Respiratory Support Tincture Making Workshop

Plantain is looked upon as a common weed and often pulled out from the garden. However, it has been used in traditional medicine of many countries. It promotes wound healing, may reduce inflammation and helps to soothe bad coughs.

We have here on the ranch a narrowleaf plantain (Plantago lanceolata), while in Europe the prevalent type is broadleaf plantain (Plantago major). Plantain has oval-shaped green leaves that can be eaten raw or cooked.

Preliminary studies indicate that plantain may help reduce inflammation.

The other plant that we gather is mullein, which is another well-known plant that is often included in cough syrup and tinctures preparations.

In addition to these two plants, we gather loquat, pineapple guava, and olive tree leaves. All of them help to heal respiratory system.

After gathering the plant material, we return to our classroom and start making an alcohol based tincture that all the participant later take home for their own personal use.

The leaves and the plants we gather are generally considered safe for consumption in tea or tincture form and very few side effects have ever been reported. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, we recommend speaking to your doctor before using this traditional herbal preparation.

In March we had the pleasure of hosting our first workshop on making tinctures from wild plants gathered on the ranch.

During the winter months and early in the springtime many people experience respiratory discomfort. Sometimes it is due to colds and flu and other times it is due to allergies. While we never intend to diagnose health issues or prescribe any treatments, we can offer some education on the proven natural ways to ease respiratory problems.

Our workshop starts with a short briefing on the ways how our Certified Organic ranch operates, and then we proceed to go for an herbal walk and gather the herbs needed to prepare our natural remedies. The walk itself is always delightful and healing, with many participants remarking later that they felt so invigorated and renewed while walking on our beautiful ranch with awe inspiring panoramic views.

We first go to the garden and gather plantain and mullein. These two plants are included in many herbal cough syrups, natural cough drops, and tinctures because they have been studied and proven to soften coughs and heal respiratory system.

Aromatherapy Workshop

One of the aromatherapy workshops is focused on the creation of balanced invigorating oil, featuring a variety of mints and rosemary as a main note, and some lavender and rose geranium as subtle floral undertones, to enhance and round out the invigorating blend.

Participants choose the carrier oil of their liking among olive, avocado, sesame, almond, and grapeseed oils, to name a few. The workshop leader explains the healing properties of each aromatic plant that we gather, and guides the participants in creating their own unique blends.

Another aromatherapy workshop is focused on creating a relaxing aromatherapy blend, featuring lavender and rose geranium, with addition of chamomile and calendula flowers. This soothing oil blend is excellent for enhancing sleep and taking the edge off for both adults and children.

There is an increasing interest in mainstream media to aromatherapy and its uses in everyday life. Lots of people discover for themselves the antiviral benefits of tea tree oil and the immune boosting properties of oregano oil, in addition to some more popular aromatherapy stars like lavender oil for relaxation, or chamomile oil for better sleep.

We are happy to offer several hands-on aromatherapy workshops, using the aromatic plants gathered on our ranch. While you can buy a bottle of essential oil in a health food store or online, there is nothing as fresh, vibrant, and delightful as the oils you make yourself with fresh plants that you pick and immediately put to infuse in a jar of carrier oil.  This way you harness the power and robust green energy of fresh plants, with its multitude of unique benefits for your mind, body and spirit.
